The piano curriculum is a balance of modern piano methodologies and piano music literature.  Usually one begins with the first in a series of texts by Faber & Faber that may include the Lesson Book, the Performance Book, the Technique Book, and the Theory Book.  These texts begin at the primer level and go through Level 5. 

In addition, students may be assigned texts also written and/or edited by Faber & Faber to further develop their technique and music reading skills in addition to text that contain piano literature of various composers through history. 

Gradually the student moves from the method books and into the study of piano literature of Bach, Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, and Debussy among many others. 

The student also continues his or her study of scales, arpeggios, in addition to finger and hand dexterity and velocity studies and etudes by Czerny, Burgmüller, and Kuhler among others. 

In the early years from year one through year three, we study, analyze, and study a broad range of practice and rehearsal techniques and.  However, The Bethlehem Music Settlement has designed a specific practice methodology that teaches the student on a systematic basis exactly what required in their own practice sessions at home.  This methodology, developed by Jack Stevenson, our director over a period of 45 years, is proven effective and is used as the principal practice technique.
